The purpose of the database is to monitor lifestyle choices and how they affect the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Since 1984, this has been changed to a general focus on the epidemiology of ageing. It covers many different health-related measures such as height, weight, information about chronic diseases, which includes cardiovascular diseases and risk factors. Further, the study includes different socio-demographic measures and information about social conditions.
